Ruins of St. Paul’s
Admission: Free
Opening Hours: Open all day
The Ruins of St. Paul’s, ranked first among the “Eight Scenic Spots of Macau,” is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally the facade of St. Paul’s Church and part of the adjacent St. Paul’s College—the first Western-style university in the Far East—it served as a major center for missionary training from 1594 to 1762. Built with granite, the 25.5-meter-high facade features intricate carvings blending European Baroque and Eastern elements, earning it the nickname “The Bible in Stone.” After a fire in 1835 destroyed the church, only the facade remained, resembling a traditional Chinese paifang (archway), hence the name “Ruins of St. Paul’s.”
